AFIDEP at the 57th Commission on Population and Development
2 May 2024

The 57th session of the Commission on Population and Development takes on special significance this year, marking the 30th anniversary of the landmark International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD).

The session’s theme: “Assessing the status of implementation of the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development and its contribution to the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development during the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development” provides a critical platform to evaluate three decades of progress since world leaders committed to putting human rights, including sexual and reproductive health and rights, at the heart of sustainable development.

As a vital intergovernmental body elected to monitor the ICPD’s implementation, a 47-member Commission on Population and Development plays a pivotal role of advising on population issues and trends, and monitoring and assessing the implementation of the Programme of Action of the ICPD. Currently, 12 African states are members of the commission: Botswana, Chad, Comoros, Ethiopia, Gambia, Kenya, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Nigeria, Somalia and Zambia.

To be held from 29 April – 03 May 2024 at the United Nations headquarters, the 57th commemorative high-level event will feature UN leaders, ministers and relevant stakeholders in vibrant discussions reflecting on the ICPD’s transformative vision while mapping accelerated implementation during this decade of action.

Dr Eliya Zulu, Executive Director of the African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP), will represent the Institute at the event. Covering AFIDEP’s extensive research on Africa’s population dynamics and demographic dividend, Dr Zulu’s presentations will delve into the prospects and investments to harness the potential of the continent’s human capital, as well as the appropriate data and systems necessary to guide decision-making.
