The African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP), in collaboration with the Angola Ministries of Economic Planning; Health; and Education, shall be conducting a workshop on the demographic dividend (DD) from 9-12 April 2018 in Angola.

The workshop, which shall be held at the National Institute of Statistics (Instituto Nacional de Estatítica, INE), seeks to review the demographic and economic opportunities that exist for Angola. AFIDEP is represented by Bernard Onyango and Eunice Mueni, who shall assess Angola’s prospects of harnessing the DD using the DemDiv model, a tool used to assess the magnitude of the demographic dividend that countries can harness under different policy scenarios. The team will also use the workshop to identify key policy options for optimising Angola’s chances of earning a maximum dividend. Further, the workshop is intended to build the capacity of the participants – pooled from the aforementioned Ministries – in running the model and also to increase the buy-in into the national DD study and products among the participants and stakeholders who will be present.

The team hopes to also use the workshop to cultivate DD champions who can continue with the advocacy and DD work after the exercise and push for the inclusion of recommendations in Angola’s future development plans and strategies.
