Kenya: AFIDEP to host an experts meeting on the demographic dividend in Africa
Event Date: 29 - 31 May 2016
Event Location: Dusit D2 Hotel, Nairobi.

The African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP) has convened an Experts Meeting on the demographic dividend in Africa in Nairobi, Kenya. The meeting will take place from May 29th to the 31st, 2016 at the Dusit D2 Hotel.

The meeting has been organised by the Evidence for Development Project (Evi4Dev), which is supported by the William and Flora. Hewlett Foundation.

The main objective of the meeting will be to review the existing demographic dividend (DD) modelling tools and explore the need and possibility of developing an “African model” to estimate the potential DD a country can earn. This model should fit and account for Africa’s unique and highly heterogeneous context in terms of socio-economic development and stage of the demographic transition.

The meeting will also propose a template to guide development of roadmaps and related technical tools that will help African governments translate the DD evidence and political commitment into programmes that guide investments to realise the DD.

The main outcomes from the meeting will be documented lessons, agreed-upon refinements to the models, and national roadmap templates.

Participants at the meeting will include international experts in the fields of demography, development economics, education, public health, environment and climate change. They are drawn from research institutions, policy think-tanks, and governments.
