Regional policy dialogue: African perspectives on emergent imperatives for the population and development agenda
Event Date: 11 Nov 2019
Event Location: Nairobi, Kenya

Under the leadership of the African Union Commission’s Department of Social Affairs, and the Government of Kenya, The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) and the African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP), are convening a regional policy dialogue to discuss emerging challenges and key considerations for the future of population and development in Africa.

The regional policy dialogue is being held at the backdrop of the 25th International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD25). Since the original ICPD declaration was endorsed in Cairo in 1994, a generation of change has unfolded in Africa, with social, physical, economic and political consequences across the continent.

The dialogue will examine five crucial challenges that have emerged as critical concerns to 21st century Africa. These are: the growing salience of urban slums as a hallmark of Africa’s urbanisation; climate change; a rapidly growing population of people over age 60; international migration and displacement; and the task of creating the conditions needed to yield a demographic dividend.
