Second cohort for East Africa of the USAID-funded BUILD PHED Leaders Program holds
Event Date: 11 - 22 Mar 2024
Event Location: Machakos County, Kenya

The USAID-funded Building Capacity for Integrated Family Planning and Reproductive Health (FP/RH) and Population, Environment and Development (PED) Action (BUILD) project will be training the second cohort of the BUILD PHED Young Leaders Program in Machakos, eastern Kenya from March 11 to March 22, 2024.

The PHED leaders program aims to empower and build the capacity of young women and men in system thinking in recognition that the underlying challenges that these countries face, including lacklustre economic development, environmental degradation, loss of biodiversity, high levels of unmet need for family planning, and rapid population growth are interconnected.

Bringing young leaders from Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya, the PHED leadership programme for East Africa will, among others, equip them with the cross-sectoral skills and knowledge needed to advocate, plan and implement integrated programming responsive to interlinked development goals.

Modules cover an in-depth introduction to the “P” – “H” – “E” and “D” approach and its integration within broader sustainable development initiatives. This is complemented by an understanding of systems thinking, strategic communications, policy advocacy, integrating gender and youth, and entrepreneurship.

BUILD is a consortium project being led by the African Institute for Development Policy with the support of four other organisations: Pan African Climate Justice Alliance, FHI360, Leadership in Environment and Development (LEAD) and Path Foundation, Philippines.
