Partnership for Increasing the Impact of Vector Control (PIIVEC)

The project aims to develop evidence-based strategies for the control of vector-borne disease in Africa and increase the utilisation of this evidence in national decision-making; Improve integration between disease-specific programmes; strengthen the resilience of African nations to respond to outbreaks of vector-borne disease; increase the leadership role of African scientists and vector biologists in global policy making on vector-borne disease.AFIDEP is co-leading the work package on policy analysis and evidence uptake.

In this collaboration, AFIDEP is co-leading the work package on policy analysis and evidence uptake.

•  We have designed a policy engagement and evidence uptake capacity strengthening programme for PIIVeC researchers, involving a week-long training and a mentorship programme. We have also designed a capacity strengthening programme for key policy makers on evidence-informed decision-making
• AFIDEP is supporting the design and implementation of a policy engagement strategy that will begin with stakeholder mapping and policy analysis at all levels. The strategy is premised on the recognition that evidence uptake should be demand and context driven, involving close engagement with decision-makers before evidence generation and translation and throughout the project period.

In 2018, a total of 53 PhD fellows and researchers from nine African countries benefited from AFIDEP’s capacity strengthening programme. They gained concrete skills on how to communicate their research and engage with policy processes to increase uptake and use of evidence in decision making. Since then, most of these researchers have used the skills gained to package their research work into accessible communications products including blogs and policy briefs.

This training was conducted under the Partnership for Increasing the Impact of Vector Control (PIIVeC) programme and the International Multidisciplinary Programme to Address Lung Health and TB in Africa (IMPALA). Both consortiums are led by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM).

The Partnership for Increasing the Impact of Vector Control (PIIVeC), hosted by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LTSM), is a collaboration of research institutes, NGOs, and national control programmes in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, and Malawi, and global policy-making bodies.
