AFIDEP at the Nairobi Summit on ICPD25
Event Date: 12 - 14 Nov 2019
Event Location: Nairobi, Kenya

The much anticipated 25th convening of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD25) will kick off on Tuesday, 12 November 2019 in Nairobi Kenya. About 6,000 delegates are attending the high-level meeting that is flanked by Heads of States, Government Ministers, Dignitaries and Representatives from across the world. Among the highlights of this event will be the opening ceremony, where momentum and anticipation for what lies ahead are heightened by keynote addresses that set the scene by giving an overview and contextualise issues of focus.

On September 4, 1994, the Cairo International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) Parliamentarians meeting, with representatives from 179 governments, issued a declaration on population and development supporting the strategy of fully integrating population issues into all development planning policies and programmes. The ICPD Programme of Action emphasized the value of investing in women and girls and affirmed the principle of sexual and reproductive health and rights for all. This outlook shifted the emphasis of population policies away from slowing population growth to improving the lives of individuals, particularly women.

For ICPD25, the 25th anniversary of the 1994 Conference, the agenda comes with about 141 sessions under 5 broad themes, and for the speakers to make commitments for action. AFIDEP will be involved in many sessions, either taking lead or co-hosting with collaborators and partners, during the 3 days. AFIDEP will be represented at this momentous Conference by its Executive Director, Dr. Eliya Zulu; Dr. Rose Oronje, the Director of Public Policy and Communications and Dr. Bernard Onyango, Senior Knowledge Translation Scientist.
